Yet another experiment on the farm is growing Oyster mushrooms outside! We were too late to try putting the spawn in trees so we tried wood chips instead.

We purchased several varieties of mushroom spawn from http://www.rvmushrooms.com/

The wood chips were from another project on the farm.  Friends cut down several aspen trees earlier in the spring, before the trees had leafed out, and offered to rent a wood chipper with us to chip the branches.  These wood chips have been very useful (they are mostly what might be called “ramial wood chips”). We’ll be repeating that next year!!

This may or may not produce mushrooms in the fall but it’s worth a try!
